In response to the recent suicides by gay youth, a group of gay and lesbian elders in Boston wanted to add their voices and words of encouragement to LGBTQ youth. Their experiences span a lifetime – when they came of age they risked everything to come out of the closet. Even though that was decades ago their advice is timeless. This is their message.

Together with Egale, we’re making sure that LGBTQ2+ youth have the support they need – when they need it. Through Canada’s National Housing Strategy, we’re partnering with Egale to build important new transitional housing for at-risk LGBTQ2+ youth.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦Β The Aging Resource Centre (ARC) at Grenfell College has called for research proposals: We are submitting a letter of intent: Anyone interested in this researchΒ please contact us.

The Aging Resource Centre (ARC) Mission

The ARC will foster collaboration between Grenfell and St. John’s campuses of Memorial University and create a provincial network of researchers studying late life issues in Newfoundland and Labrador. In addition, the ARC will prioritize knowledge mobilization and engagement with older adults.

Letter of Intent – ARC – Aging Research Centre

Title: A Needs Assessment for the Newfoundland and Labrador LGBTQI2S* older adults, seniors, and aging population.

NL Gray Gays : Rick Boland, Geoff Chaulk, Chris Shortall, Pamela Sheaves

Background Introduction: The LGBTQI2S* community faces particular challenges in aging concerning the supports that public and private health care agencies provide. We are now in the first generation of LGBTQI2S* Elders (baby boomers who were liberated in the 1960’s-70’s). Some research has been done in other jurisdictions and has uncovered several challenges.

Social-Isolation

Rainbow Health Ontario

LGBTQI2* Elders fear that they may be β€œforced back in the closet” in residential care and they have concerns about end of life decision making. LGBTQI2S* elders may face a lack of residential staff who are aware of LGBTQI2S* identities and histories and staff may lack of guidance around particular care concerns of LGBTQI2S* Elders. It is unknown if service providers are aware about the institutional impacts of homophobia, biphobia, lesbophobia, and transphobia. Compounded by the limited definition of β€œfamily” in legal and medical settings LGBTQI2* Elders are a new demographic that have not had their unique health and wellness issues addressed.

LGBTQ Seniors Long Term Care Homes

Our Organization: NL Gray Gays is a recently formed advocacy group. The group aims to identify the needs and challenges faced by the aging LGBTQI2S* community, and seeks to find and implement solutions to these challenges.

Research Question: The research we would like to complete would include a survey of members of the β€œover 50” LGBTQI2S* community addressing all aspects of their plans (or lack of) for attendant care, an assessment of the financial capacity of the community to access care, and a review of the infrastructure available to the community with an assessment of its shortcomings.
The research will be difficult, particularly in rural NL. Many people who may be living a queer life and self-identify as LGBTQI2 may not be β€œout” socially. We see the research consisting of online anonymous questionnaires, consultation with NL Pride and other organizations, alongside in depth personal interviews. We would include consultations with both public and private health and home care providers in the entire province.

Ideal Outcomes: The result of this research would provide NL Gray Gays with an assessment of the needs of the LGBTQI2S* community for the next 20 years. It will provide invaluable information about the situation facing LGBTQI2* Elders in our province and may be used to form the basis of funding proposals to the federal and provincial governments and any other foundations or agencies. It is intended to identify the planning and design of facilities that meet the emerging needs of this emerging demographic, as well as if there are gaps in service provider awareness. This research will be used to begin the work already in progress in other jurisdictions in Canada.
