GLAAD launches countdown to Spirit Day 2016!

The degree and kind of a man’s sexuality reach up into the ultimate pinnacle of his spirit ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

pink-happy-heart-smiley-emoticonToday Sept 15, 2016 GLAAD launched the official countdown to Spirit Day, the largest and most visible campaign in the world working to advance acceptance of LGBTQ youth. Spirit Day takes place on October 20th and inspires millions around the world to wear purple or ‘go purple’ on their social media accounts, creating a united stand against bullying and in support of LGBTQ youth.

“Since its inception, Spirit Day has brought unparalleled attention to one of the most painful issues that disproportionately affects LGBTQ youthbullying,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. According to GLSEN’s most recent National School smilie-family-better3Climate Survey, 85% of LGBT students report they have been verbally harassed with 65% percent reporting that they have heard homophobic remarks frequently or often in school. GLSEN also reported that 30% of students missed at least one day of school in a given month because they felt unsafe or uncomfortable in their school environment. Ellis adds, “Young people are our future, and it’s imperative that we empower them to be the leaders of tomorrow. With updated anti-bullying resources in multiple languages, Spirit Day 2016 is sure to reach more youth than ever with messages of acceptance and support.”

Every year, Spirit Day draws the participation and suport of celebrities, corporations, media outlets, sports leagues, schools, faith institutions, national landmarks, and individuals. This year, Spirit Day is made gayheart possible by the generous support of its presenting partners Target and Wells Fargo, official partners, Dow, Google, NBA and WNBA, NFL, and WWE, and supporting partners, American Eagle Outfitters, Barilla, Chobani, Comcast NBCUniversal, Kellogg’s, Kirkland & Ellis, Toyota Financial Services, and Zipcar.

waving_crossed_gay_pride_flags“LGBTQ youth deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential. To be comfortable with and proud of who they are. To be free to be exactly who they were born to be, “said Laysha Ward, Executive Vice President & Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, Target. “Target is excited to be a Spirit Day presenting partner, working with GLAAD to raise awareness around the issue of bullying in the LGBTQ youth community.”

“A child’s true potential should never be diminished by fear,” said John Lake, Wells Fargo’s LGBT segment leader. “We see Spirit Day as a powerful tool to raise awareness of the challenges faced by kids who identify as LGBTQ and to show our solidarity as an ally. We are committed to working alongside GLAAD to help combat bullying and protect LGBTQ youth – an effort that remains at the core of our decades-long commitment to the LGBTQ community.”

smileTo celebrate the countdown to Spirit Day, GLAAD also released crucial anti-bullying resources for educators, parents, and students. GLAAD’s Anti-Bullying Resource Kit provides tools and information teachers the aide in keeping bullying out of the classroom and help both teachers and parents support LGBTQ youth. Additionally, GLAAD released the Spirit Day Kit, which helps people of all ages bring Spirit Day directly to their community, including schools and local media outlets.

Coinciding with National Bullying Prevention Month, Spirit Day began in 2010 after a high untitled-1school student posted the idea to her Tumblr page following the suicide deaths of several LGBTQ and LGBTQ-perceived young people. Previous Spirit Day participants include The White House, The Empire State Building, Britney Spears, Oprah Winfrey, Ellen DeGeneres, Cher, Shaquille O’Neal, Good Morning America, The Today Show, The View, The Talk, The Tonight Show, the NBA, the NFL, Major League Baseball, NASCAR, WWE, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr, the Las Vegas Strip, and more.

Welcome to the Show ~ Adam Lambert

header2.jpg

Take your flaws in stride, nurture your talents, take pride in your Queerness, and share all the love you have. — Adam Lambert

After recording the song a few months ago, I felt very compelled to create a video to further communicate it’s meaning. adam-lambert-does-epic-kermit-the-frog-impersonation-socialI notice such diversity in my audiences when I’m on tour: Young, old, male, female, Trans, Gay, Straight, White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, and every beautiful in-between. The common bond is that they are all HUMAN BEINGS. No matter how we identify, the human heart has a universal set of emotions and needs.

Sure it’s idealistic, but couldn’t we be recognising our similarities, instead of our differences? It all comes down to Identity. We as a society are obsessed with how to classify and define each person. There are new labels invented monthly for how to describe new “types”. In some cases, these labels are needed to empower us and give us clarity, but it seems that at some point, all the categorising can become quite divisive.

Welcome To The Show is an anthem about facing exactly who you are and OWNING it. Its intended as a mantra to inspire strength and PRIDE.

pride

103006574I’ve seen so many people trapped by the identity they put so much effort into maintaining, or shunned by choosing not to. I have fallen into that trap myself True Individuality seems daunting in our age of social media popularity contests. Sometimes it’s terrifying to face your true, whole self, stripped of any pretence. The good, the bad, the cracks, and the scars. I am no stranger to the feeling of not liking myself.

Once I get past my own body image issues, I realise that I sometimes also neglect my own spirit. Living in a world filled with so much hatred sometimes makes cultivating self-love a adam-smilie2very difficult task. I have always struggled with this as I’m sure many of you have. My path is a kind of paradox in that I get to share my craft with the world, but also be willing to throw myself to the wolves. To dare to be different, but still wanting to be accepted. There is vast beauty to be found in life’s contradictions. This non-binary reality allows us to lead happy, expressive lives, and yet this very freedom comes with great risks. I’m not alone in this limbo.

This is the first time I’ve produced my own music video. With the help of my friend and long – time collaborator Lee Cherry, we set out to co-direct something notably honest. I spoke with Laleh (the brilliant songwriter who is featured on the song) and we agreed on the vulnerability we wanted captured on screen.

I think the more we as artists share 5bffa15e76893ea4c1a195f63963e6fc6dcdfc193992012ourselves openly, the more someone outchuckie-guitar there may feel inspired to do the same. I also felt a strong feeling of empowerment in creating this video independent of the label system. It was time to shoot this one on my own.

This video isn’t about selling a song, or product placement, or racking up viral views. This is intended simply as a creative expression. What resulted on set came from a very free and organic headspace that allowed me to connect with the camera as if it were each person who’s supported me over the last 7 years.

ithank youThis video is a thank you to all of you who have lined up to see the Original High World Tour. To everyone who has listened and shared my songs and given me the purpose to keep moving forward. It’s a thank you to all of you who choose to accept and Love who YOU are! We hold each other up! I want you to keep celebrating exactly who you are, even if you don’t fit into the worlds ideas of what they think you should be.

“Through my art, I pledge to bring empathy and courage to anyone who has been made to feel unworthy or ashamed while daring to be themselves. “

Ontario Making College and University More Affordable

Premier Wynne Meets with First Cohort to Benefit from New OSAP

wynne3Premier Kathleen Wynne met with Grade 12 students at Central Technical School in Toronto today to talk about reforms to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP). Students in Grade 12 will be among the first to benefit from Ontario’s single largest modernisation of student financial assistance when the Ontario Student Grant launches as part of the reformed OSAP in September 2017.

Today, more Ontario students are graduating from post-secondary programs than ever before. But some youth hesitate to aspire to a college or university education because they worry about the costs or graduating with debt from student loans. The Ontario Student Grant will help OSAP empower more students to seek an advanced smilie-boy-blue-shirt2education based on their abilities and potential, not their family’s income. The new OSAP will:

  • Allow eligible students whose parents earn less than $50,000 to graduate without having to pay back provincial student loans
  • Provide the Ontario Student Grant to make the average cost of college and university tuition free for thousands of low- and middle-income students
  • Ensure that no eligible student receives less aid than they are eligible for now under the 30% Off Ontario Tuition Grant, which the new OSAP will replace.

Ontario’s highly educated workforce is one of its greatest economic strengths67 per cent of adults in the province now have a degree or diploma, higher than any country in the OECD and up from 56 per cent in 2002. By addressing the affordability barrier that can deter students from low- and middle-income families, these OSAP reforms will help meet or exceed the target of 70 per cent post-secondary attainment.

Investing in access to post-secondary education is part of the government’s economic plan to build Ontario up and deliver on its number-one priority to grow the economy and create jobs. graduateThe four-part plan includes helping more people get and create the jobs of the future by expanding access to high-quality college and university education. The plan is making the largest infrastructure investment in hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and transit in Ontario’s history and is investing in a low-carbon economy driven by innovative, high-growth, export-oriented businesses. The plan is also helping working Ontarians achieve a more secure retirement.

QUICK FACTS

  • About 150,000 students are expected to benefit from the reformed OSAP when implemented in 2017.
  • The Ontario government will work closely with colleges and universities to ensure that reading-a-bookfamilies see clearly up-front the difference between the sticker price for tuition and what the student would need to pay.
  • The new OSAP will allow mature students to qualify for more grants so they can go back to school to upgrade their skills.
  • Since 2002–03, Ontario has increased investment in publicly funded colleges and universities by $2.2 billion — an 82 per cent increase.

headshot“We are levelling the playing field so all students can go on to college or university no matter how much money their parents make. Changes to OSAP will build a more fair society by expanding access to education to help all Ontarians flourish — and strengthen our economy by further equipping our highly skilled and educated workforce.”

Kathleen Wynne ~ Premier of Ontario

rose

headshot-1“We believe that access to post-secondary education should be based on the ability to learn and not on the ability to pay. That’s why we’re moving forward with one of the most ambitious reforms of student financial assistance in North America.”

🇺🇸 The Tyler Clementi Foundation

header2.jpg

About the Tyler Clementi Foundation

boygirl3The Tyler Clementi Foundation is an organization created by the Clementi family which seeks to prevent bullying through inclusion, assertion of dignity and acceptance as a way to honor the memory of Tyler Clementi: a son, a brother and a friend.

In 2010, Tyler’s death became a global news story, highlighting the impact and consequences of bullying while sparking dialogue amongst parents, teachers, and students across the country. The story also linked to broader issues impacting youth and families such as LGBT inequality, safety in schools, youth in crisis, higher education support systems, and cyberbullying.

Not only does the foundation continue to carry the important message about the suicide risk facing many LGBT youth, which can be three to seven times more at risk for suicide giphythan other youth, but The Tyler Clementi Foundation recognises that our message of standing up to bullying speaks universally across all cultures and identities.

Since 2011, The Tyler Clementi Foundation was born out of the urgent need to address these bullying challenges facing vulnerable populations, especially LGBT and other victims of hostile social environments. Through programs such as #Day1, which provides free downloadable toolkits customised for different communities, the foundation encourages leadership in creating safe spaces where individuals are able to stand up to bullying and embrace diversity.

Tyler’s Story

Meet Tyler. His story inspires thousands.

tylerDecember 19, 1991 – September 22, 2010

Smart, talented and creative: Tyler Clementi was deeply loved by family and friends for his kind heart and bright spirit. At the young age of 18, he became a victim of a horrible act of cyber-harassment and humiliation. His story puts a human face on the consequences of cruelty, which has been faced by millions of others suffering in silence in their schools, colleges, teams, workplaces, or faith communities. Tyler’s story has inspired tens of thousands of youth and adults to be Upstanders in the face of bullying, harassment and humiliation across the globe.

Read about bullying statistics here.

A Passionate Young Man

Tyler could think outside the box.

He grew up with a passion for music. Tyler began playing the violin in the third grade and became an accomplished violinist. He 2539718-1843096140-fiddlperformed in numerous orchestras and was awarded with several accolades for his musical contributions.

Tyler was also an enthusiastic bicyclist and unicyclist.

By combining his knowledge with creativity and talent, he taught himself to play the violin while unicycling! He understood that we all must learn to embrace unique qualities in others and in ourselves.

Coming Out

Another quality Tyler learned to embrace was his young, gay self.

The summer after his high school graduation, Tyler had just begun the important journey of coming out to close family and friends. Tyler was brave and honest about who he was, but this was still a difficult, vulnerable time for him.

toolkitIn August of 2010, Tyler began studying at Rutgers University where he was excited to learn, grow and have the freedom to live openly as a gay man.

He began playing violin at the institution’s high level orchestra. Only a few weeks into his first semester, Tyler’s musical gifts earned him a seat in an orchestra comprised primarily of upperclassmen and graduate students. Tyler was one of only two incoming freshman who made the graduate school orchestra.

Targeted for humiliation

Within weeks, Tyler became the victim of a horrible act of cyber-harassment, a type of bullying or cruelty that takes place using the internet.

At college, Tyler was immersed in his studies and violin practice. One night, Tyler asked imvulgbticonhis dorm mate, Dharun Ravi, for some privacy because he had a date. Ravi agreed but what Tyler didn’t know was that Ravi was planning a horrible act of humiliation; he secretly pointed his computer’s webcam at Tyler’s bed, and then left.

During one spying session, Tyler’s roommate captured him in an intimate act and invited toolkitothers to view it online. Many other students at the university contributed to this invasion of privacy by not standing up to report or stop what was happening to Tyler.

Tyler discovered what his abuser had done. When he viewed his roommate’s Twitter feed, he learned he had widely become a topic of ridicule in this new social environment. He also found out that his roommate was planning a second attempt to broadcast from the webcam.

Several days later, Tyler Clementi ended his life by jumping off the George Washington Bridge. He was eighteen years old.

Model Legislation for Eliminating the Gay and Trans Panic Defenses

williams-header

“Be a full-time student of life, and learn every day, then there would be no surprises.” ~ Sourav Adhikari

Williams Institute Scholars Provide Model Legislation to Eliminate Use of Gay and Trans Panic Defences

smilie-borg“Gay panic” and “transgender panic” defences have been asserted by defendants in criminal trials throughout the U.S. since the 1960s.  In these cases, defendants have argued that their violent behaviour was a rational response to discovering that the victim was LGBT

The defences are rooted in irrational fears based on homophobia and transphobia, and send the message that violence against LGBT people is understandable and acceptable.  When successful, these defences have resulted in murder charges being reduced to manslaughter or another lesser offence.

To date, only one state, California, has banned defendants from asserting gay or transgender panic defence by statute.  In this brief, Williams Institute scholars present model language, based on the language adopted in California, that other states may use to eliminate use of the defences through legislation

gayheartThe model legislation offers language to prohibit defendants from using gay and trans panic defences under each of the major defences theories of provocation, insanity/diminished capacity, and self-defence.  In addition, the brief provides an overview of the ways in which the defences have been asserted in trials throughout the last several decades, and evaluates potential constitutional challenges to state legislation eliminating use of the defences.

“If you want Peace, you don’t talk to your friends, you talk to your enemies” ~ Desmond Tutu

peaceline.jpg

Mission

The mission of the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation is to use Desmond Tutu’s life and teachings to inspire young people to build a world of peace within themselves, peace between people, and peace among nations.

Vision

The Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation envisions a world in which everyone values human dignity and our interconnectedness. Real peace will prevail when there is a culture of peace in red-rosethe USA and around the world.  That culture originates in the hearts and minds of our youth, the future leaders and peace-makers of the world. Our programs are based on the teachings of Desmond Tutu who has dedicated his life to reshaping conversations about peace, equality, and forgiveness.

The philosophy of Ubuntu guides us with its meaning of We are all connected. What affects one of us affects us all.

our-founder

The Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation is the only nonprofit organisation in North America incorporated by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu is a South African Anglican cleric who became one of the central leaders of the global peace movement. An outspoken defender of human rights and campaigner for the oppressed, Desmond Tutu’s eloquent advocacy and brave leadership lead to the end of South African apartheid in 1993 and the installation of Nelson Mandela as the nation’s first black President. The HRC Foundation

hrc-header2Mission Statement

equalThe Human Rights Campaign and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation together serve as America’s largest civil rights organisation working to achieve LGBTQ equality. By inspiring and engaging individuals and communities, HRC strives to end discrimination against LGBTQ people and realise a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

The Human Rights Campaign envisions a world where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people are ensured equality and embraced as full members of society at home, at work and in every community.

Human Rights Campaign Story

The Human Rights Campaign represents a force of more than 1.5 million members and 20026supporters nationwide. As the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer civil rights organisation, HRC envisions a world where LGBTQ people are ensured of their basic equal rights, and can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.

Our History

The Human Rights Campaign Fund was founded by Steve Endean in 1980 as one of the first gay and lesbian political action committee in the United States. The Fund’s mission was to provide family-smilie3financial support on behalf of the gay and lesbian community to political candidates who supported gay civil rights legislation. Vic Basile served as the Fund’s first executive director.

The Fund quickly rose to prominence – after its first election cycle in 1982, the Fund was the 17th largest independent political action committee in the United States.

In 1995, under Executive Director Elizabeth Birch, the organisation dropped “Fund” from its name and expanded its reach far beyond political lobbying work. Programs such as the Workplace Project and the Family Project became part of the newly created educational arm, the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. All of HRC’s research, communications, marketing and public relations functions were greatly expanded. It was a key transformation that paved the way for the powerful organisation that it is today.
