Meaning of Family

lovetoknow

“Family is what you make it.” Whether made of blood relatives, friends, or pets, or a combination of these, your family can offer you the support you need to thrive.

140422-425x282-Family‘Family’ is a single word, with many different meanings. People have many ways of defining a family and what being a part of a family means to them. Families differ in terms of economic, cultural, social, and many other facets, but what every family has in common is that the people who call it a family are making clear that those people are important in some way to the person calling them his family.

Definition of Family

The dictionary defines family in several ways. One definition is “a fundamental social group in society typically consisting of one or two parents and their children.” While this definition is a good starting point, there are several modern family structures that are excluded by this definition, such as childless couples or other variations on the family unit. Another definition is “Two or more people who share goals and values, have long-term commitments to one another and reside usually in the same dwelling.” This definition encompasses the vast majority of modern family units; for the purposes of this article, the second definition will be used.

Who Makes a Family?

The traditional family consists of a father, mother and children. This is the family shown on television as the standard family. However, the 21st century showcases a variety of family units, some very different from the standard of the 1950s. Today, children are also often raised in single parent homes, by grandparents or by homosexual parents. Some families opt to have no children, or cannot have children due to some medical or emotional barrier. The idea that parents and children make a family is a basic definition; however, in order to accurately everyone_color_logo-260979792197acknowledge other family structures, a broader definition is necessary. In addition to a more universal family definition, there are also plenty of people who consider a group of friends to be family, and adults who consider pets as defining members of the family unit.

Friends as Family

Many people consider friends to be as close or even closer than extended (or immediate) family. People who have lost close family members may create a family unit of friends with similar interests and goals to become replacements or enhancements to a lacking family structure. This type of family unit, while untraditional, can be 10478932_1429436927345277_3717096846277777157_njust as close, if not closer, than a traditional structure. Friends are chosen by an individual; at times, these people may be more special or important than the family a person was born with. In addition, some people who have supportive families also have an extensive network of friends who they consider to be a second family or as additions to their blood or legal relatives.

Pets as Family

Pets can also become members of a family unit. Pets add an element of responsibility to a family, particularly for children. For couples who cannot, or choose not to, have children, pets can be a replacement and be loved as dearly as children. Pets, such as dogs and cats, are cared for as additional family members by many people and are mourned as such as well when they pass away.

Redefining Family

4_stretchy_menRather than simply defining family by a dictionary definition, each individual should look to define a family by his own standards, enriching the dictionary’s definition. You can have several families in your lifetime, even several families at once if you choose. Regardless of how you choose to define your family unit, whether it is traditional or unique, your definition is of the family unit that works for you. As the saying goes, “Family is what you make it.” Whether made of blood relatives, friends, or pets, or a combination of these, your family can offer you the support you need to thrive.

Kids bullied into mental care

Untitled-1Teenagers are ending up in psychiatric care after being urged to commit suicide online, social service providers say. Evidence of the toll of social media abuse on teenagers has been submitted to a select committee considering tougher laws against cyber-bullying. In its submission, the Dunedin social services council and community law centre said members had dealt with teens suffering mental issues after being repeatedly urged online to end their lives. On one occasion, a 14-year-old’s identity was outed on an online forum. Within three hours there were 150 anonymous posts, some urging the teen to “go kill yourself”. The teen stopped attending school and was admitted to a psychiatric ward. Another agency claimed that nine out of 10 young teenage girls seen by counsellors were told to kill themselves online, the submission said. “The effects of this kind of post or text on the victims vary widely, but it is fairly common for girls to attempt suicide as a result of being told to ‘go kill yourself’.” Social media could also allow already suicidal teens to connect and get advice for ending their lives. One 15-year-old’s Tumblr page was filled with anonymous tips and links to “how to kill yourself”. The teen later attempted suicide. Girls appeared to be more vulnerable than boys, but both were increasingly likely to have a social media presence, such as a Facebook page, at a younger age, the submission said.

fightCyber-bullying has come under increasing scrutiny, with reported links to suicides both here and overseas. Television personality Charlotte Dawson took her life in Sydney last month after a long and public battle with depression. She had been subjected to cyber-bullying. In the past 18 months, the deaths of at least two teenage girls have been linked to abusive texts or online messages, with coroners calling for tougher rules for cyber-bullying. New Zealand has one of the highest rates of youth suicide in the developed world, particularly among young men. Youthline national spokesman Stephen Bell said bullying online was often a manifestation of problems in the real world. However, the internet could connect people in ways that weren’t previously possible, creating new opportunities as well as problems. Social media could be used to glamorise young suicide victims or create new suicide-based communities, such as “cutting clubs”. “These are clubs where self-harm is treated like a lifestyle,” he said. “We got very close to one young person going to the States to meet someone from one of these clubs.”Law changes are before Parliament to create new criminal offences for intentionally posting “harmful” messages online and “inciting suicide”. They would also allow people to complain directly to the courts. Submissions on the changes were largely positive, but there were concerns they could have “chilling effect on free speech” online. Justice Minister Judith Collins said the Harmful Digital Communications Bill “struck a careful balance between freedom of expression on the one hand, and preventing or reducing harm to people on the other”. Social media defamation the tip of the legal iceberg

Defamation is only the tip of the iceberg

Defamation is only the tip of the iceberg according to lawyers who say social media-related challenges could range from workplace bullying claims to commercial disputes.Fairfax Media reported on Monday that the NSW District Court awarded a teacher $105,000 in damages in Australia’s first Twitter defamation battle to proceed to a full trial. The court held that a former student had defamed music teacher Christine Mickle, making false allegations about her on Twitter and Facebook. Lawyer Stuart Gibson said that the case would clarify this area of law. “The same principles [of defamation law] apply [to social media] except that you’re likely to be easier to prove the grapevine effect by social media through discovery and hence amend your claim and possibly seek the cap on damages which is $355,500 at the moment… across the country.”
Mr Gibson said that more claims had been made in the past five years as smartphones made social networks more accessible to more people. “[On social media] everyone becomes a publisher and for the purposes of defamation I suppose potentially liable depending on what they publish.”
He said that while the court lists did not demonstrate a big market for social media-related legal disputes, academic textbooks had been written about the role of the internet in defamation law, which was now part of the curriculum for law students. Law firms, including his, had also started to advertise “social media law” among their services.
Maurice Blackburn employment lawyer Emeline Gaske said it was “inevitable” that people would use exchanges on social media networks as evidence of bullying by co-workers or in the workplace, particularly as the line between home and work hours blurred.
“We don’t have the same cooling-off time before people post things that they come to regret later,” she said. “In the past someone might be at home and feeling angry at a colleague and would not have had an opportunity to say something… until the next day. Now there’s a mechanism for that.”
She argued in the Law Institute Journal that social media posts viewed during work hours could amount to “bullying at work” under recent changes to the Fair Work Act, even if the alleged perpetrator was not at work at the same time.
But Ms Gaske said that the anti-bullying reforms, introduced in January, were not “open slather” for social media claims, because employees still needed to prove that their health and safety were put at risk.
She said that social networks also enabled “employers to monitor behaviour of employees in a way they haven’t been able to before” and to give rise to lawful disciplinary action and dismissal.
She said social networks’ impact on legal disputes was comparable to when emails became a prominent form of communication: “Social media is unique in that it affects all areas of legal practice, both by giving rise to legal claims and by being able to be evidence in legal disputes.”
Fabian Horton, director of Connect Law Australia, said social media also gave rise to all manner of commercial disputes as businesses increasingly used social media to market their brands and communicate with customers.
“Reputation will very shortly become one of the biggest tradeable commodities the internet will work on,” he said. “They’re already creating technologies that will measure, value and market reputation in all its forms, and that includes trust. How much trust does a set of eyeballs place on [an online] persona?”

Dad, who killed his gay son, jailed for life

A Turkish court has found a father and two uncles guilty over the manslaughter of a 17-year-old teen page_escinsel-oldugu-icin-oldurulen-rosin39in-ilk-durusmasi-goruldu_902149250A father who killed his gay son for β€˜shaming the family’ is facing life in prison.
On 2 July 2012, 17-year-old Roşin Γ‡iΓ§ek was found beaten, bloody and with a bullet wound in his head at the side of the road in a Turkish town. Two days later, he died.
After a landmark case that lasted for nearly two years, a court yesterday (10 February) found Γ‡iΓ§ek’s father Metin and uncles Seyhmus and Mehmut guilty of manslaughter. All three were handed a sentence of life imprisonment.
The court rejected the family’s defense the death was caused by β€˜accident’.
According to local activists, the attitudes of the defendants’ relatives towards the press and LGBTI activists were β€˜extremely aggressive’.
The mother of the murdered teen requested the press be removed from the courtroom.

At one point, she yelled: β€˜If [my son] were gay, I would have killed him with my own hands! You have shamed us!’

rcescinselcinayetleriAfter repeatedly denying the manslaughter, the father finally confessed in the last hearings.
Sezgin Tanrikulu, vice president of Turkey’s Republican People’s Party, has demanded the government legislate against hate crimes and discrimination against LGBTI people.
A HΓͺvi LGBTI Initiative spokesman said: β€˜We LGBTI people will continue our struggle against the homophobic-transphobic state and culture until this mentality collapses to create a world rid of hate where people like Roşin Γ‡iΓ§ek live, where they can breathe freely, and where families do not kill their children.’

Anti-bullying bill named for victim to be introduced

Antibullying_bill_named_for_victim_to_be_introducednbsp-syndImport-113613When 17-year-old Carlos Vigil took his own life in July, his family says the impact was felt around the world. The gay high school student had been relentlessly bullied at school and online. Now, a state senator will introduce legislation in Vigil’s name to try to prevent bullying in New Mexico.“He was a wonderful big brother. He was a wonderful son,” mom Jacqueline Vigil said. The Vigil family spoke exclusively to KOB Eyewitness News 4 about the journey to insure their son’s death is not in vain.”It’s so bad that people didn’t realize how beautiful he was as a person,” dad Ray Vigil said. Each day without their beautiful son feels like a lifetime for Jacqueline and Ray Vigil. For years before his death, watching Carlos face a daily struggle at school, and even at home, was its own great pain. “Every day I kissed him on his forehead, and told him I loved him,” Ray said. “I couldn’t take away what was already done.” Since 3rd grade, Carlos was hurting. The bullies seemed to be everywhere. “My poor boy was just 24/7,” Ray said. “Myspace, Facebook, Twitter. It just, you can’t get away from it.” Carlos’s grandma Dolores Marquez is crusading to keep his memory alive, alongside his parents. “Carlos was a victim of society,” she said “The weapon used? Words.”Marquez says reporting the bullying to grown-ups at school didn’t help. Yet, bullied himself, Carlos still reached out to help others.”He was the one who would stand up against a bully for somebody else,” Jacqueline said. Carlos was working with lawmakers to develop anti-bullying legislation. He planned to run for mayor of Los Lunas when he turned 18 this year. When he died, his family knew they had to fight too. “People are understanding now, that this is an epidemic,” Jacqueline said.
On Tuesday at the roundhouse, the Vigil family will stand alongside Sen. Jacob Candelaria, D-Albuquerque, to introduce a bill requesting $200,000 for bullying prevention programs across the state.
“We’re still here, supporting him and making sure that what he started gets finished,” Jacqueline said.
It will be called the Carlos Vigil Memorial Fund, and for the Vigils, it’s a step toward Carlos’s own dream.
“He told me, ‘Grandma, I’m going to stop bullying.'” Marquez said. “I think, today, ‘Is that how you’re doing it, son? Because it’s getting done.’ At the risk of our shredded heart, and at the risk of not having him anymore, but it’s getting done.” Candelaria will introduce the bill Tuesday with several bipartisan co-sponsors.
The Vigil family says they hope there will be a future discussion about punishment and consequences geared specifically toward bullying-related offenses.

Reflections on Youth Suicide

DANGER-suicideAdolescence is a time of dramatic change. The journey from child to adult can be complex and challenging. Young people often feel tremendous pressure to succeed at school, at home and in social groups. At the same time, they may lack the life experience that lets them know that difficult situations will not last forever. Mental health problems commonly associated with adults, such as depression, also affect young people. Any one of these factors, or a combination, may become such a source of pain that they seek relief in suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people after motor vehicle accidents. Yet people are often reluctant to discuss it. This is partly due to the stigma, guilt or shame that surrounds suicide. People are often uncomfortable discussing it. Unfortunately, this tradition of silence perpetuates harmful myths and attitudes. It can also prevent people from talking openly about the pain they feel or the help they need. Communication is the first essential step in assisting youths at risk of suicide. Learning the facts about suicide can help build a parent’s confidence in discussing a difficult subject.

SOME MYTHS ABOUT SUICIDE
Myth: Young people rarely think about suicide.
Reality: Teens and suicide are more closely linked than adults might expect. In a survey of 15,000 grade 7 to 12 students in British Columbia, 34% knew of someone who had attempted or died by suicide; 16% had seriously considered suicide; 14% had made a suicide plan; 7% had made an attempt and 2% had required medical attention due to an attempt.
Myth: Talking about suicide will give a young person the idea, or permission, to consider suicide as a solution to their problems.
Reality: Talking calmly about suicide, without showing fear or making judgments, can bring relief to someone who is feeling terribly isolated. A willingness to listen shows sincere concern; encouraging someone to speak about their suicidal feelings can reduce the risk of an attempt.
Myth: Suicide is sudden and unpredictable.
tumblr_mee3p0cVq11qli1dto1_500Reality: Suicide is most often a process, not an event. Eight out of ten people who die by suicide gave some, or even many, indications of their intentions.
Myth: Suicidal youth are only seeking attention or trying to manipulate others.
Reality: Efforts to manipulate or grab attention are always a cause for concern. It is difficult to determine if a youth is at risk of suicide All suicide threats must be taken seriously.
Myth: Suicidal people are determined to die.
Reality: Suicidal youth are in pain. They don’t necessarily want to die; they want their pain to end. If their ability to cope is stretched to the limit, or if problems occur together with a mental illness, it can seem that death is the only way to make the pain stop.
Myth: A suicidal person will always be at risk.
Reality: Most people feel suicidal at some time in their lives. The overwhelming desire to escape from pain can be relieved when the problem or pressure is relieved. Learning effective coping techniques to deal with stressful situations can help.

WHO IS AT RISK
In Canada, suicide is the second highest cause of death for youth aged 10-24. Each year, on average, 294 youths die from suicide. Many more attempt suicide. Aboriginal teens and gay and lesbian teens may be at particularly high risk, depending on the community they live in and their own self esteem.

Suicide_boy_freedom_coverSuicide is a complex process. The cause can seldom be attributed to one single factor, such as the death by suicide of a rock star or family break-up. It may be a routine event or an overwhelming one that overloads a vulnerable youth’s coping mechanisms. As well, new research suggests that there may be a genetic link to suicide. A family history of suicidal behavior should be taken into account, if for no other reason than the young person may have been affected by this behavior in the past. Suicidal youth rarely make a direct plea for help. But most will exhibit warning signs.
Here are some of these signs:
– Sudden change in behavior (positive or negative)
– Apathy, withdrawal, change in eating patterns
– Unusual preoccupation with death or dying
– Giving away valued personal possessions
– Signs of depression; moodiness, hopelessness
– One or more previous suicide attempts
– Recent attempt or death by suicide by a friend or a family member

Care2 “You Deserve a Standing Ovation”

unnamedDear Terry,
This year, we helped save a dog named Dutch because someone like you started a petition on Care2. Dutch was going to be euthanized because he bit a woman who was beating him with a pole. But then Jen Drake started a petition to save him, more than 300,000 of us signed it, and together we saved Dutch.

Every day Care2 members like you start petitions that make a huge difference in your communities. Together, we’re saving dogs like Dutch, fighting climate change, calling out corporate abuse, and so much more.

Want to know what Dutch has been up to since we rescued him? Dutch’s mom, Heather Aguilar, sent us the scoop of “Dutch in action”.

Below are some of the campaigns that Care2’s 23 million members started and won this year. I hope you’ll read them and then start your own petition to make a difference in 2014.

Β A Christmas Wish that never came trueΒ ~ A Christmas Wish that I will never do ~ Terry.K

MON-ROSESHi friends, with the Christmas season fastly approaching, there is only one wish I have, and that would be to wake up Christmas morning and see my mom’s face, just once more to be able to spend Christmas day with her, but with the way my life situation is right now, it is and probably will be just a hopeless wish, I really love and miss you so much. Not knowing how much time she has left, before she gets her wish, and that is to be with my Dad again, please forgive me for not being there at such a crucial time in your life, but know it really breaks my heart. I love you more than anything dear Mother, there are no words right now to express how I feel, a storm of emotions have taken control, for the one I hold to myself of love I do know. Love you forever & always. ❀

UPDATE Jan 2015

“A Prelude to BILL C-51”

One year later, November 2014 my mother passed away, not getting the chance to see her one last time, but most importantly, the respect above all else of one’s parents destroying my relationship with my family because I couldn’t attend her funeral they believed to be my choice.
But rather because of Bill C-51 whereas the government (Police Services) through the invasion of privacy due to a hunch, they also destroyed my relationships with, friends, colleagues and acquaintances, I was bullied and harassed out of my current employment, lost of all future employment prospects, lost of health services, destruction of personal property, exclusion from home safety, security and privacy just to name a few, in essence stealing the life out from under me, taking my dignity and self worth, now questioning life itself, and they proceeded without any remorse, regret or empathy!
So if your not concerned about Bill C-51, I suggest you prepare for the worst because your in for a rude awakening if you don’t speak up now and save yourselves and your lives.
