Cruelty in the face of Kind

Kindness is the Language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. ~ Mark Twain

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

trustOttawa, ON: Thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers, Kind remained open this past holiday season, to offer compassion and companionship for members of Ottawaโ€™s queer community who may face isolation in other areas of their lives. Public support was high for the first year of this holiday drop-in, and Kind intends to carry on this new tradition in years to come.

peace-gayThese extended hours were unfortunately not without cost. At an unknown time during the holidays, Kindโ€™s cash deposit box was taken, along with over $700 contained within. As the case would be too open ended, due to the amount of people who access the centre, the Ottawa Police Service has refused to file a report for this theft. Kind instead would like to appeal to those responsible to return what was stolen. The deposit box, along with the missing funds, can be returned to Kind at 331 Cooper St. with no questions asked.

Any information concerning the whereabouts of the deposit box can be delivered anonymously to Kind staff at (613) 563-4818. Please bear in mind that we are not interested in accusations or hearsay.ย

sunny_smilesThe communities that Kind serves and represents are disproportionately affected by poverty, and Kind acknowledges that these situations can happen as a matter of necessity. As such, we urge the public not to pass judgement on the person or persons responsible, but instead consider how important it is to support ongoing services and spaces for LGBTTQIA communities.

gayheartKind is Canadaโ€™s oldest registered charity run by and for the LGBTTQIA community, but that history does not come with an overabundance of funds. While Kind recognizes that the money taken may be of great importance to those who took it, it also helps keep our lights on and our doors open. If concerned members of the public donโ€™t have information leading to the return of these funds, we urge them to otherwise become monthly donors, so that Kind may confidently continue to serve and support Ottawaโ€™s LGBTTQIA population.

subject: Thank you.
Dear Terry,
You are part of something extraordinary.
There are millions of people whose lives will be better next year โ€“ truly, tangibly better โ€“ because of what you helped achieve this year. So today, I’m writing to thank you.
This year, more than any year in history, we have seen a true shift in momentum for equality in America.
…State by state, marriage equality is becoming reality.
…Case by case, the bonds of love are triumphing over discrimination and hate.
…Vote by vote we are moving toward true fairness in the workplace.
…Step by step, we are building a nation where all people are secure in their full civil rights.
Email-Header-NarrowAnd it’s all because of you, Terry. History is not made by bearing witness. It is made by taking action.
You have generously proven your willingness to see this struggle through to the finish โ€“ until the day when every young person in this country will grow up knowing true equality, freedom, and dignity. We know that day will come. We will not rest until it does. And when you look back, you will know you were on the right side of history.
From all of us at HRC โ€“ thank you. May you have a warm and happy Thanksgiving.
Yours,
Chad

City ‘Faces of Diversity’ presentation focuses on prevention of bullying in the workplace

cityhall_postPhoenix residents filled a City Hall room on Friday to learn how to prevent and respond to bullying in the workplace and how bullying at work is often connected to earlier bullying in the schoolyard. The public presentation, put on by the Equal Opportunity Departmentโ€™s Phoenix Human Relations Commission, was part of the Faces of Diversity Brown Bag Series, which aims to increase respect for individuals and make people feel welcome in the city through different meetings each year, said lead equal opportunity specialist Marquita Beene. Novemberโ€™s topic was โ€œEmpowerment in the Workplace: Creating a Bully-Free Zone.โ€ Bullying is something that is universal,โ€ Beene said. โ€œIt is something that can impact you no matter what your current status or place in life.โ€ A 2010 Workplace Bullying Institute survey cited in the presentation found that half of the U.S. workforce reported either being bullied or witnessing bullying at work. Despite workplace bullying happening frequently, people are not as aware of it as they should be, said Nicole Stanton, advisory board member for the organization Stop Bullying AZ and wife of Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton.
images (2)Stanton created Stop Bullying AZ as a bullying prevention initiative in 2012. Although she was never bullied herself, Stanton said her older brother came home from school every day terrified of his bullies. โ€œI watched that happen to him, and it was really impactful on me,โ€ Stanton said. Stanton said the organization was initially started for her brother, but once children and adults started emailing her their own bullying stories, she realized it was something bigger. A member of the Phoenix Human Relations Commission saw a presentation by Stanton on bullying earlier this year and asked her to apply it to the workplace for the commissionโ€™s series, Beene said. Stanton said her organization focuses primarily on children and does so because once children turn 18, they enter the workforce, where bullying may continue if it isnโ€™t remedied earlier.
workplace-bullying-do-school-bullies-turn-into-workplace-bulliesโ€œIf they were bullies in school, they are likely to be a bully in the workplace,โ€ Stanton said. โ€œThat is not going to change.โ€ Stanton offered advice in the first part of the presentation on what to say to bullying victims and how to tell if someone is being bullied, from physical warning signs to changes in mood or behavior. Stanton said it is important for people to understand what bullying is so they can create the appropriate response to it. โ€œIf we call everything bullying, then it kind of demeans and degrades people who are actually going through it,โ€ she said. Carrie Severson, founder of Severson Sisters, a nonprofit organization that encourages self-confidence in females, discussed workplace bullying statistics, signs and responses during the second part of the presentation.

Severson said the main difference between bullying in school and bullying at work is that children are bullied because they are viewed as less than the bully, while adults are targeted because they are viewed as a threat to the bully.

workplace-bullying (3)When an adult feels a coworker is better than him, he will sabotage or manipulate the target with the goal of getting the coworker to quit or be fired, Severson said. But she said bullying cases usually do end with the target quitting or just never speaking up. โ€œNo one is going to fight for your job but you,โ€ Severson said. Not only do most workplace bullying cases go undocumented, but there are currently no anti-bullying laws for the workplace in any U.S. state, according to the presentation. Severson said the majority of people she talks to who have been bullied at work want to know their legal rights. The only thing she can do for them, she said, is teach them about how to get their power back and speak up.
yourfileBeene said a large percentage of the complaints that go through the Human Relations Commission every day are labeled as discrimination yet are actually bullying cases. She said this is because people want to have some sort of lawful action, but that is currently not possible with bullying incidents. The city is creating a policy, expected to pass sometime next year, to teach employees and human relations people to prevent bullying in their workplace, Beene said. โ€œIn the city of Phoenix, most people strive to respect other people,โ€ Beene said. โ€œBut I donโ€™t think we always do the best job at doing that.โ€

Anti-Gay Christianity Claims Another Life

This is Carlos Vigil, of Valencia County, N.M., just south of Albuquerque:
2013-07-16-CarlosVigilBy all accounts, Carlos was a terrific young man: compassionate, thoughtful, kind, actively engaged in helping young people deal with the devastating effects of being bullied. Being bullied was something Carlos knew much too much about. He was gay, and for that he had been relentlessly bullied for as long as he could remember. Finally, as he was set to enter his senior year of high school, that bullying proved too much for him. On July 13, Carlos posted this online:
2013-07-16-Carlossuicidenote
1337969316_bully2And then he hurt himself so badly that, three days later, his family took him off life support. Carlos is now in a place where no one is ever bullied. Bullies bully because they feel empowered to do so. And why do bullies in America feel particularly empowered to victimize gay people? If you’re wondering about the answer to that question, you’re only pretending to, because you know why. We all do. American bullies feel empowered to freely hound, denigrate, and beat up LGBT people because they live in a country historically and culturally defined by, and everywhere infused with, Christianity. And the ubiquitous “traditional values” brand of Christianity (as opposed to the Christianity in which I believe) has long and very actively taught that being gay is a reprehensible moral abomination, an offense against God so foul that divine justice demands that in the afterlife gay people be punished by spending eternity having the living flesh burned off their bones. imagesMany American bullies who victimize gay people do so confident, at one level or another, that they are furthering the cause of God — just like the pastor up the street, or the pastor on the radio, or the pastor on TV, or the pastor at the head of any of the infinite number of Christian “ministries” that trade in the hectoring of gay people. Anti-gay theology and physical brutality are as near as the church pulpit is to the street outside the church. If you’re a Christian who believes that being gay is a sin, then tonight, after you’ve turned off the lights and laid your head down to sleep, take a moment, please, to listen into the darkness.

Fan: Jamey loved Lady Gaga and left a thank you to her as one of his last postings before he died Hear that distant, horrific scream? That’s yet another gay teen being piteously tortured by a bully acting out the theology that you subscribe to and support. It’s the sound of another young gay person accepting as true about himself or herself what Carlos so heartbreakingly expressed finally and ineradicably believing to be true about himself: that he was born a freak unworthy of ever loving or being loved. That scream is, or should be, your “Christian” conscience. See also: “Taking God at His Word: The Bible and Homosexuality,” which shows that the notion that God condemns homosexuality is anything but biblical; “Christians and the Blood of Jamey Rodemeyer”; and this cartoon, which I made to be watched until its very end.

god1There are those of us that have a burning or yearning, the thoughts of what excatly is going through the mind at that very moment, putting it bluntly, they shoot themselves, take an overdose or hang themselves, it’s that moment when it will all finally stop, you will be free finally, that’s how bad it can be, believing something so horrific, is the only answer, only to find yourself very dead as well, they end their life (Pain). I honestly can say I know, because at the age of just 19 years old, “I” a failed suicide attempt, as they say “Been There-Done That” I was there and know all the terrible feelings of hurt and pain, and how much you pray for it to stop but never did, until I realized that it was GOD who decided my faith at that moment, he said no my son not now I have things I need you to do for me, but let it be known, I will not decide for you how your life will be, Good or Bad?, nor will I make life wonderful for you, throns of Christ“No” I won’t, as only you have that power, but if you trust me, let me lead the way, I will see you have all that you will need, courage, strength, knowledge and Guidance, you may not see me but I will be at your side no matter what, as long as you follow me you will succeed. at this point I’m Feeling really bad, for my sin and cannot look God in the eye, with tears in my eyes asking GOD for forgiveness, saying over and over how truly sorry I was..he said do not be sorry my son, for I have an abundance of forgiveness just follow me, so I did! the crossA difficult task for some but if you really tried to replace feelings of HATE with LOVE and understanding, you will see it’s a positive step in changing the world. We all have the ability to Hate, we also have the ability to love, always try to choose Love because LoveWorks. In closing, I am sincerely honored for the opportunity to be of assistance and associated with “BetterLegal” and the “It Gets Better Project” So I want to share my sincere gratitude and say thank you very much to Mr. Dan Savage, creator of the “It Gets Better Project” and Mr. Elliot Rozenberg, Director, “BetterLegal” for enabling me this opportunity to participate and offer my assistance for the wellness and security of all LGBTQI people’s …Lotsa Luv ๐Ÿ™‚

Another Teacher Suicide With Workplace Bullying Causal Factors

13230061208931323005644589Several factors typically merge that exacerbate the misery that convinces individuals who choose to die by suicide to act. Research has found that in workplaces where bullying operates simultaneously with several other negative conditions, it is the bullying that has the greatest deleterious effect on people โ€” bullied targets and witnesses. Given that many peopleโ€™s identities are centered around work and what one does for compensation, work can dominate home life factors.
Finally, to connect the dots, misery from work travels home readily. Bullying at work inevitably strains domestic relationships. Thus, for targets exposed to unremitting stress at work from bullying, a very personalized form of abuse, eventually it feels like the world is closing in on them. Taking oneโ€™s life suddenly becomes an option when no alternatives are visible.
31284984-657d-48c1-9ccc-eddce1be3d58Such a case was reported in the Bassett Unified School District in southern California. Jennifer Lenihan was a Bassett High art teacher, known by students for personally buying class supplies, creativity and loving the art museum. According to press reports quoting her stepfather, Lenihan was driven to suicide by the school principal, Robert Reyes and assistant principal Jimmy Lima. There were reports of the two administrators shaming Lenihan in front of teachers and students. And she was assigned a class with which she was unfamiliar (a classic tactic used to destabilize good veteran teachers) and told to teach the class or lose another class she wanted to teach. She took stress leave, receiving half her salary for a short time. Her claims for disability insurance and workersโ€™ compensation were both denied. She took out a personal loan to live. The district gave her two options: resign or apply for a waiting list for rehire. images (2)She was at the end of her rope. Her mother had given her rent money. The next day, July 1, she took her life. Teachers union officers said the treatment Lenihan received is common at the district. Further, Reyes and Lima have a record of bullying teachers. The new district superintendent said there was no โ€œwritten formโ€ record of complaints from Lenihan. He said the district has no โ€œmoraleโ€ problem.
